America Go Fishing has created a very efficient system for coding our public reef sites in order for waypoint lists to be easily imported into GPS Units and Chartplotters. The abbreviated data gives you an uncluttered screen, as you can see on the map below. We use this system on our GPS Unit Files and on the GPX files.
GPS Numbers on Your Unit
View what our waypoint lists contain by clicking the image to the right. We include 4 fields in our Unit and GPX files:
1. Name – We use ID numbers which allow our sites to import easily into most GPS brands. An example site MU-101 means Monroe County Upper Keys site number 101. You can look up site details on the companion PDF or KML file.
2. Description/Comment – The site name and a code letter(s) for materials & rules (if any) is on each site. An example Molasses-SW-SPA-XB which means Molasses Reef Southwest in SPA (sanctuary preserve area) with a mooring buoy that you can tie up to but the X indicates you cannot fish while tied to the buoy. If a site has only a B, it means you can fish while tied to the buoy. We include a chart key PDF file to help you learn the codes.
3. Latitude
4. Longitude
Depths - Some brand files will import depths, most do not. We have the depth and the relief of most sites listed on the PDF companion files.
To view full site details, look up the Site ID number on the PDF companion file. Individual site rules are included using letter symbols for highly regulated areas. Memory Card packages include a handy Chart Key Card for examples of how sites are laid out and all the codes used.
Rules for lobstering are presented on sites mostly where you cannot lobster. We do not indicate sites that are good for lobster catching as these sites would be inundated with users which is not good for the species sustainability.
This online waypoint map shows the reef sites included on our reef site lists. On each site is the popup balloon which is equivalent to opening a waypoint on your GPS unit. Open each waypoint to see the site name, materials on the site and any rules associated with the site. See tables below the map for codes used on reef sites.
